Long-Term Lane Closures in 9th Street Tunnel Begin September 28
(Washington, DC) — The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will implement long-term lane closures in the southbound 9th Street Tunnel beginning Monday, September 28, 2026, to perform critical structural and infrastructure repairs. The work is expected to continue through June 30, 2027.
Operational hours and locations are listed below:
Location: Southbound 9th Street Tunnel, beginning near Constitution Avenue NW and continuing beneath the National Mall.
Dates: September 28, 2026, through June 30, 2027.
Continuous Closure: One outer southbound travel lane closed 24/7.
Off-Peak Closures: 6-hour temporary closure of the center travel lane as needed.
Throughout the project, one outer southbound travel lane will be closed continuously, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, beginning near Constitution Avenue NW and continuing through the tunnel beneath the National Mall. Work will begin with the left outer lane before transitioning to the right outer lane as repairs progress.
Additional temporary closures of the center travel lane may be required during off-peak hours to safely accommodate construction activities. During these periods, southbound traffic may be reduced to one travel lane.
The extended closures will allow DDOT crews and contractors to safely complete necessary repairs and maintenance to tunnel infrastructure following damage sustained earlier this year. The work is part of DDOT's ongoing effort to maintain the safety, reliability, and long-term condition of the District's critical transportation infrastructure.
Motorists should expect delays, particularly during peak travel periods, and are encouraged to plan ahead and allow additional travel time. Motorists should use caution when traveling through the work zone and are encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid delays.
