High School Juniors & Seniors Invited to Compete for National $12,500 College Scholarship

North Dakota high school juniors and seniors are encouraged to apply for the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP), which includes a $12,500 college scholarship.

Two high school juniors or seniors from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Department of Defense schools are chosen for the program each year. It includes the $12,500 scholarship and a “Washington Week” event, which will be held March 6-13, 2027.

The USSYP focuses on public service, leadership, and education. Participants will hear speakers from the legislative, executive and judicial branches of the federal government and members of the national media and other key policymakers.

“The United States Senate Youth Program recognizes students who have already shown a commitment to learning, service and citizenship,” North Dakota State Superintendent Levi Bachmeier said. “These students reflect both hard work and a growing dedication to public service. By supporting emerging civic leaders through meaningful scholarships like this, we strengthen the future of North Dakota and reinforce the patriotism that comes from serving our communities.”

Applicants are chosen according to their leadership qualities and ability to serve others in an elected or appointed student office during the entire school year. Applications are ranked and scored by a state selection committee.

The USSYP application process consists of completing a web-based form; writing a personal essay and persuasive essay; submitting letters of support; and obtaining principal and parent signatures.

The application deadline is midnight Oct. 18, 2026.

The United States Senate Youth Program was established in 1962 to offer a study and scholarship opportunity for outstanding high school students who were interested in public service careers.

The $12,500 scholarship is funded and administered entirely by The Hearst Foundations, which have supported the program since its inception. No public funds are used.
